Mljet was designated a national park in 1960 and is situated on the northwest part of the island Mljet. It stands out with its simple panoramic views of the surrounding shorelines, and islands. It simple system of saltwater lakes is well known around the globe. It’s well developed and very rich in forests and vegetation. Within the region of the Mljet lakes the forest drops down to the shore and provides with a unique experience of unspoiled nature. One of the symbols of this national park has got to be the tiny island of Saint Mary which is smack bang in the middle of one of the lakes, on this island is a Benedictine Convent and church that date back to the 12 century.
In the middle of the Great Lake there is a monastery and St. Mary's Church built in 12th century by Benedictines from Monte Gargano, Italy. The church has changed its look trough times under different cultural changes, from Renaissance to Baroque, but central part remained Romanesque style.
